WELCOME RAIN OVER CATCHMENTS

Melbourne’s water storages are now 29.4% full (521,498 million litres), compared to 28.4% (or 502,827 million litres) at the same time last year. This represents close to 19 billion litres more water in storage.

There was above average rainfall over the four major catchments during the week, including 31.2mm at Thomson and 44.4mm at Upper Yarra. Runoff remained below average, however, reflecting that the catchments themselves were still fairly dry.

Rain and ongoing water savings helped keep consumption low. Melbourne’s average daily water consumption was 962 million litres per day compared with an average of 1,108 million litres per day in the 1990s.

Overall, there was a slight drop in total storage volume this week of 0.13%.

Stage 3a restrictions are in place until at least 30 November 2008. Further details on water restrictions are available by visiting the Our Water Our Future website or by contacting the government water retailers.
