RAIN BRINGS SLIGHT INCREASE IN STORAGES

Melbourne’s water storages are now 29.5% full (523,906 million litres), compared to 28.6% (or 507,710 million litres) at the same time last year. This represents over 16 billion litres more water in storage.

With an average of 37.4mm of rain falling over the catchments during the week, there has been a net increase of around 2.3 million litres in storage, or a total volume increase of 0.14%. The rain has also dampened the catchments themselves, which improves chances of good runoff from more rain forecast for the next week.

Rain and ongoing water savings helped keep consumption low. Melbourne’s average daily water consumption was 950 million litres per day compared with an average of 1,108 million litres per day in the 1990s.

Stage 3a restrictions are in place until at least 30 November 2008. Further details on water restrictions are available by visiting the Our Water Our Future website or by contacting the government water retailers.
