BOX HILL SOUTH ODOUR CONTROL
A new facility to control unpleasant odours in Box Hill South is already proving to be a tremendous success.
A $470,000 air treatment facility has been constructed over the past two months near Foch Street to control odours from the sewer system in the area.
Melbourne Water Program Director, Phil Corluka, said the new plant was now operational with data readings showing an outstanding performance.
“Readings taken only one week after start-up indicate more than 99% of odour removal, which is below the level that can normally be detected by human smell,” Mr Corluka said.
“A permanent data collection system will be installed over the next three months. This will provide Melbourne Water with the ability to monitor its operational efficiency on an ongoing basis.”
“Sewage naturally produces gases that corrode sewers, making it important to treat the gases to maintain the sewer system.”
The local community group, Box Hill Greenlink, will revegetate the area with about 300 plants this Saturday [June 13] to help the facility blend into the surrounding environment.
This air treatment project is part of a major, five year program to improve sewerage and drainage systems across the Port Phillip and Westernport regions.
The project has been delivered by the Pipelines Alliance, a partnership between Fulton Hogan, Jaydo, GHD and Melbourne Water.
The new facility is located south of Foch Street on open land next to the shared pedestrian and bike path which runs along the perimeter of Box Hill Golf Course.
The Pipelines Alliance would like to thank the Box Hill Greenlink group and the City of Whitehorse for their support and assistance.
