2008 Waterways Water Plan

Melbourne Water works with State and Local Governments, regulators such as Victoria’s EPA and the community to improve the health of rivers and creeks, and to enhance their environmental, economic and social values. Melbourne Water also plans and delivers drainage infrastructure to service urban growth and provide a safe level of flood protection for communities within the Port Phillip and Westernport regions.

Melbourne Water works to provide a safe level of flood protection for communities through flood mapping, mitigation works, monitoring and emergency response.

The Essential Services Commission sets the prices Melbourne Water uses to fund these activities. The Commission makes its determination taking account of proposals put forward by water businesses in Water Plans. Melbourne Water has recently submitted a final Water Plan for its waterways, regional drainage and floodplain services to the Commission. The Water Plan summarises the outcomes, activities and expenditures Melbourne Water proposes to deliver and the prices it proposes to charge for the next five years.

Preparing the Water Plan has involved extensive consultation with State and Local Governments, regulatory agencies, community groups and Melbourne Water's Waterways Advisory Committee in an effort to set clear goals for its waterways, drainage and flood management programs and to ensure efficient and effective service delivery. The Water Plan reflects public, Government, regulatory and customer feedback received from Melbourne Water's 2008 Waterways Water Plan Consultation Draft.
