Latest info on rain and storages

The weekend of 26-27 September brought almost 100mm of rain to Melbourne's catchments. Storages have now posted some of their biggest single-day gains since 2007.

Latest storage levels

Here's a summary of how reservoirs have faired so far:

  • The major catchments averaged 93mm between 8am Friday and 8am Monday. It was one of their wettest weekends of the year.
  • Storages rose from 30.8% on Friday to 32.1% on Tuesday – a net increase of about 24 billion litres. This is more than three week's water supply for Melbourne.
  • Because the catchments are now fairly wet, runoff rates from this rain are quite strong – which is why storage levels are posting solid gains compared with earlier in the year.
  • Storages rose by over 8 billion litres in the 24 hours to 8am Tuesday, as water made its way through the catchments and into reservoirs. Levels will continue to rise over the next few days as more water flows through.
  • Storages are still about 30 billion litres lower then at the same time last year (32.1% compared with 34.5%).

Minor flooding – Yarra River

Check the Bureau of Meteorology for latest flood warnings.

  • Water levels in upper sections of the Yarra River have reached the minor flood level at some points – including around the Warburton area. The river is not expected to reach flood levels in metropolitan Melbourne.
